camping wadi rum
If you choose desert camping, you will certainly have an exciting and relaxing experience. It is exciting because you are in the desert with your friends or family and our Bedouin guide. Maybe you have never camped in the desert before, or have many times but it will still be a new location with the nature and culture of Wadi Rum Protected Area. Our guide will select a suitable location for the camp depending on the season and weather conditions. For example if it is raining our guide will need to choose a location with rain protection. There are many sandstone camping places that have rain protection in Wadi Rum so you would go to one of these places. If its windy our guide would choose not to go to an area that is too open but one that is much more protected from the wind, so you can enjoy the fire, stars and dinner. If its really hot we will need to find a sleeping area with a cool breeze and shade from the sun. This is basically how our guide will decide where you will be sleeping for your night in the desert.

Once you have arrived at the camping location the first thing the guide will do normally is put your mattresses and his mattress in the position they will be set up for the night. You can help decide this also, its no problem and if you want privacy for the night its also ok but we recommend having someone who has grown up in the desert and sleeps in the desert most nights as protection for a safe night.
Bedouin guide collecting wood for desert camping in Wadi Rum
After the beds are in place the Bedouin guide will next most certainly go to look for wood for the fire. We strongly recommend you go with him to experience and see how he collects the wood. There is an art to it and he is certainly a professional in this field. Also you are able to try yourself once you have seen how he does it. Some dead wood is taken from inside the sand and needs to be dug out with hands and maybe hit with a rock and can take a few minutes to get out if its a large piece. Others are collected and are broken of much more easily from inside shrubs or at the base of the shrub. Some kindling can be collected from the ground generally. Normally you need to get the amount of wood that can be held in 2 or 3 people hands and arms as they walk it back to the camp. Also the location of the camp will be chosen based upon if the Bedouin guide thinks there is plenty of wood around. They will not choose the location if they think there will be no wood as they love the fire and hot tea more than anybody. A head lamp or travel light will be useful in the collection of wood as often this will be the time the sun is going down and the stars are coming out.
Wadi Rum Desert of Wadi Rum Protected Area Jordan
After the wood has been collected you and the Bedouin guide will take it back to camp and sit down for a relax on the mattresses. He will begin to make the fire with the wood collected. Here his main thinking is about Bedouin whiskey = normal tea with a lot of sugar and possibly milk or some herbs from the desert. He will show you how to make a great fire that will get the most out of each piece of wood and will be enough to make tea, dinner and to have some wood left over for relaxing after dinner. In the morning he will go and get more wood for breakfast.
Once the tea is on the fire and its going nicely it a nice time to relax enjoying the fire and stars and just where you are in the desert in Jordan. It is very quiet and you can hear sounds from far away. If the stars are out you will simply be amazed and see many shooting stars. Its a nice chance to take some photos also and if you have a tripod you have a real good chance to take the night sky’s picture. Once the teas ready the guide will pour you a glass of his tea. Some tourists like with milk and some prefer without its upto you. But its really and enjoyable glass of tea. Sometimes the glasses will be special also.
Next the guide will prepare your freshly cooked dinner. There are a number of dishes he can prepare depending on your dietary preferences. Some are not suitable for vegetarians and some are. It will take him between 30mins and 1hr to prepare and cook dinner and in this time you can just be enjoying and relaxing. Once dinner is ready eat as much as you like. If you like a drink such as wine, beer or spirits its best to buy before in Aqaba, Amman or Petra before you arrive as no one in the desert sells anything much.
Wadi Rum Desert camping after dinner
After dinner you can do as you wish, chat, play cards, watch the fire, enjoy the stars, listen to music you can do whatever you want.
Then we usually fall asleep when everything goes quiet and have a pretty deep sleep. The feeling when you wake up in the desert is quiet rejuvenating and unique. Your whole body clock has slowed down a few paces and you can just enjoy the slower pace of life. Generally we wake up with the sun, and the time will depend on where we have been sleeping. Some locations are much better for an early sunrise and others will let you sleep in til 10am.
Once we are up the guide will collect wood and you are free to join him again if you wish or just keep relaxing. Again he wants tea so he will collect the wood pretty quickly.
Once the wood is collected he will make tea and coffee if you wish. Then he will cook a fresh breakfast for you. It will be eggs, tomatoes and onions with some spices in Jordanian bread. After breakfast depending on your plans maybe you will have a quick look around the area, begin your tour or be taken by 4wd back to Rum Village for your next stop.
We hope you like this desert camping as much as we do.
